TIT centres narratives by womxn, about womxn - for everyone.

OUR LENS

TIT is the 3rd issue of our in-house publication - The Irregular Times, India’s first art and design newspaper.

Historically, the art hanging in museums and galleries has prioritised male narratives. We know them, we study them, we glorify and celebrate them. The canon of art we have always known is from the privileged perspective of the male artist.

In Issue 03 of The Irregular Times, we challenge this prevailing hegemony.

We aim to shift the power of storytelling in the form of paintings, photography, performance, writing, and sculpture to the talented and phenomenal artists we’ve spotlighted in this issue. We introduced writers, highlighted stories about the legacy of womxn in our lives, and focused on the importance and significance of owning and knowing our bodies. This issue was made possible by the contributions and genius of many fantastic artists. We believe that there is a lot for us to learn here, and to play with; most important, this issue features some delicious art that one is encouraged to cut out and frame.

This issue came about in a bid to challenge the male-centric art market, because we at the Irregulars believe that there is a space and platform for everyone. Art by womxn needs to be seen, talked about and celebrated, and this issue is here to listen and make space. We have designed this issue as a portal to how we imagine building the future of the art market.

TIT is an ode to the countless, faceless womxn who make art at home, with their children, who cook for their husbands, partners and families, whose labour goes unnoticed, and unrecognized. It is an ode to the artists in our community who push against the grain and challenge the boundaries of art making.

We also drew inspiration from the Guerrilla Girls, Pushpamala, Ana Mandieta, Martha Rosler, Ibeyi, Adrian Piper, Yayoi Kusama, Rosalia, Ruth Asawa, Alok Menon, Kara Walker, Aravani Art Project, Abida Parveen, Mary Kom, and Disha Ravi, to name a few, in no particular order.

THE DESIGN

Using a non-rigid DIY like design system, every page of this issue was designed to lend itself to each womxn artist’s story. The design of each fold is made to forge a new found intimacy with the art, the story and the process so as to transport the reader into the chaos of the journey, as well as the deliciousness of the outcome.

Keeping the same spirit alive, we have ditched the idea of a specific design language that constitutes continuously present or evolving design elements. Taking from what the artist had done or the medium of art itself, we transformed each fold design into a home for the art and the artist. For e.g. - if thread was the medium, then thread was the display type. If kerning was the topic of discussion, then an InDesign display was the page itself.

It transcended perfection like its artists to flow in all forms - journal design, digital collage, art features, uncensored imagery, word art, typography, DIY and origami, art to cut and frame, and even parchment inserts.
